How to Play TrivGang

Everything from creating your first room to the advanced strategies that will make your friends think you've been practicing. (You will be practicing.)

What TrivGang Is (And Isn't)

TrivGang is a live, real-time multiplayer trivia game. Not a quiz app where you take turns on your own schedule. Not a single-player challenge. Every player is live in the same room at the same moment, seeing the same question, racing to buzz in first.

It runs in your browser — no app to download, no account required to join. You need 2 people and a question. Everything else is optional.

The closest analog is a live game show — the tension of the countdown clock, the scramble to buzz in, the six seconds of pressure after you do. Except it's in your living room, or the bar, or via a shared screen on a video call.

Setting Up a Game

1

Create a Room

On the TrivGang homepage, tap "Create Room." You'll immediately get a unique 4-character room code — something like K7MX — that's active for 30 minutes. This is your game's address. Share it however you want: text message, Discord, shout it across the room.

2

Everyone Joins with the Code

Other players go to trivgang.polsia.app, enter the room code, and pick a display name (or an avatar). They land in the lobby where you can see who's there. No accounts required for players joining a game — just a code and a name.

3

Host Starts the Game

Once everyone's in the lobby, the host taps "Start Game." There's a brief countdown and then the first question appears. From that moment, you're live. All 21 questions, 3 rounds, no pausing once it's running.

4

Read the Question — Then Race to Buzz In

Each question animates in word by word (the "reveal phase"). This gives everyone a fair chance to read it before the buzzer opens. Once the full question is shown, tap anywhere on your screen to buzz in. Whoever the server registers first gets the hot seat.

5

Answer in 6 Seconds

You've buzzed in. A 6-second countdown starts. Type your answer or speak it. You don't need perfect spelling — the fuzzy matching system accepts close answers. If you're right: points, celebrations, and the next question. If you're wrong or time runs out: the question reopens for other players.

6

Score, Rounds, and Tiebreakers

Points accumulate across all 21 questions. Between rounds, scores are shown with a brief leaderboard. If two players are tied at the end, a tiebreaker question drops — first correct answer wins. Final scores show who ruled and who needs to study more.

The Buzz-In Rules in Detail

Tap Anywhere

No specific button. Tap anywhere on screen to buzz in after the question reveals.

6-Second Clock

After buzzing in, you have exactly 6 seconds. The clock is visible to everyone.

🔄

Miss = Open Round

Wrong answer or timeout? The question reopens. Other players can then buzz in.

🎯

Fuzzy Matching

Close enough counts. Typos and slight variations are accepted. The correct idea wins.

🏆

Speed Bonus

Correct answers earn more points when you buzz in faster. Precision + speed = domination.

🎲

Tiebreaker

Tied at the end? Sudden death — one question, first correct answer wins everything.

Question Categories

TrivGang pulls from a broad range of categories in every game. No single subject dominates — the mix is intentional so that players with different knowledge strengths all have their moments.

Winning Tips From Regular Players

Buzz in fast, think while talking. In TrivGang, securing the buzz is half the battle. If you think you know the answer, buzz in immediately — you can still be formulating the exact phrasing during those first 2 seconds before you have to speak.
Don't overthink the fuzzy matching. If you know "Napoleon" is the answer, type "Napoleon" — not "Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte I of France." Shorter is faster and fuzzy matching handles common variations.
Watch what others miss. When another player buzzes in wrong, you get to hear their wrong answer. Sometimes that's exactly the clue you needed to figure out the right one. Paying attention to failed attempts is a real edge.
Read to the end before buzzing. Experienced players wait for the full question to reveal before buzzing in. The last word often changes what the question is asking — buzzing in mid-sentence and getting it wrong is costly.

Playing at Parties and Group Events

TrivGang works great for groups larger than 8 if you get creative. Cast the game to a TV or projector — everyone watches the questions appear on the big screen, but only 2–8 active players have their phone connected. Rotate players between rounds, or run a bracket tournament with multiple rooms.

For virtual game nights, share your screen in Zoom or Discord so everyone can see the questions on the big screen while playing on their phones. It sounds complicated but takes about 30 seconds to set up and feels exactly like a game show.

For bars or event venues: connect a laptop to the main display, start a room, and have players join on their phones. Works with 50+ people watching as a spectator experience with 8 active competitors.

You know how to play. Now actually play.
